Ipswich Town beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-2 at the Lord Clyde to lift the Terry Potts trophy, thus joining that elite band of teams who've won the cup and been relegated in the same season. With the Ipswich team bus being delayed by traffic, the match start was delayed somewhat, eventually getting underway at half past eight. Sheffield had arrived on time, but the fact that they could only muster five players made that a somewhat easier task. Sheffield came out of the blocks fast, going 1-0 up by taking the first team leg without their opponents getting near a double. Captain Ian Barber lead by example hitting a 125 along the way. Ipswich struck back immediately by taking the first of the pairs, which Mike Walton finished in stellar fashion with a 160 checkout. They then took the lead when Ray & Paul beat Jon & Sid, in their last five visits the Ipswich pair taking out 424 in 13 darts, a single dart average of 32+. Ian & Gary then levelled the match for Sheffield at 2-2, getting well ahead but letting Chester & Perry back into it before staggering over the line. In the first singles leg Mike continued his good form of the pairs to beat Paul comfortably. Despite reducing a 32 leave to 9 at his first attempt, Scott prevailed over Gary by taking that out in two darts next visit to put Ipswich 4-2 up. Ray also had his troubles towards the end of his leg against Jon when it took him five darts to get from 52 to a double, but hit it first dart once he did. It then fell to Paul to take the fourth singles leg against Sid, clinically taking out 60 in two darts and with it clinching victory for Ipswich by 6 legs to 2. At 2-2 after the pairs the match had looked like going the distance, but Ipswich then put the pedal to the metal, winning the first four singles to clinch the match. Special mention must be made again of Mike's 160 checkout in the first pairs leg, which rather knocked some of the wind out of Sheffield's sails after their own hot start. Congratulations to both teams for some excellent darts and a well contested final. By our sports correspondent: E. I. Addio. |
